Catatumbo

Geochemistry

In the Catatumbo Basin, light oils with API gravities above 30º are dominant. There is no direct relationship between reservoir depth and API gravity. They are oils generated during a late expulsion phase and its high thermal evolution explains the high API gravity.

Most of the stratigraphic sequence is at the late oil and gas window. The generation potential is affected by high thermal maturity, especially of pre-Turonian units.

As mentioned, the Organic matter content (TOC) ranges from 0.5 to 6.0%. Some La Luna intervals and Paleocene units reach TOC values above 6%.
