Urabá Basin is located in the northwest extreme of Colombia on the border with Panama. It covers a total surface of 9417 km2 and consists of two physiographic environments: a marine area located in the gulf of the same name with an area of 4150 km2 and an onshore sector with two sub-environments with different geological and physiographic features. The first is formed by a flat morphology of fluviomarine plains and marshes with an area of 3740 km2. The second sub-environment comprises a mountain morphology composed of sedimentary and igneous rocks located on the eastern and western edges of the basin. The free area of the Urabá Basin is located onshore, with an area of 3630 km2.
