Chocó (Atrato Sub-basin)


Introduction

From a regional point of view, the Chocó Basin constitutes a large geomorphologic depression located between the Western Cordillera and the Baudó Mountain Range. It extends from the border with Panamá in the north, to the Garrapatas Fault in Buenaventura region in the south. The Istmina Deformed Belt, which represents a basement high, allows the separation between a northern Atrato sub-basin, and a southern San Juan sub-basin(Figure 2).
