Sinú-San Jacinto- Lower Magdalena Valley


Prospectivity

In Sinú-San Jacinto-Lower Magdalena Valley special area, geochemical data indicate the presence of rocks with potential to generate hydrocarbons, deposited during the Late Cretaceous to Oligocene, which actively generated hydrocarbons, as evidenced by the gas and condensate fields in the Lower Magdalena Valley and the abundance of seeps in the Sinú and San Jacinto fold belts. The presence of multiple levels of sandstone and conglomerates with good characteristics as a reservoir deposited during the late Paleocene to middle Miocene is clear. Similarly, there are favorable geometries for accumulation of hydrocarbons that include, among others, folds by inverse faulting, folding by mud diapirism, truncations by normal faults against basement, truncations and sindepositional unconformities on mud diapirs flanks, and calcareous and clastic deposits in basement highs which are so far the most successful and explored play.

There is an additional exploration opportunity in Magdalena Lower Valley, related to the presence of coals in Ciénaga de Oro Formation, and the possibility of methane gas associated with them.
